Twitter for Restaurants - Food for Thought

So you want to get your restaurant up and running with twitter?

We like your enthusiasm! But before you jump head first, here are some things to consider:

1. As Chris Brogan points out in his new book Trust Agents, make sure you spread other peoples messages about 12 times more than you do your own.

This is so you don't sound spammy and actually gain some traction with your followers and prospective customers. Twitter users are very quick to notice (in a bad way) someone who only toots their own horn.

It reminds them of something…. Oh right advertising!

People use Twitter and other social networks to communicate with real people and share thoughts, ideas, hopes, and dreams. Not to read your advertising messages.

2. Build up a following before you start pushing out your own content. Don't show up as the new guy on the block and start screaming at people. It won't work.

3. Once you've ENGAGED with the community and have people that are actually interested in what you have to say or recognize you as someone who legitimately cares and shares, then you can start your promotions. But use these SPARINGLY. Again, spam is spam, no matter what the medium.

After you start getting the hang of how to communicate with people in social media communities, start reaching out to other areas of the Internet where you might be influential.

Check out this list of the Top 15 Social Media Resources for Foodies. Start commenting and engaging with people where you think it can be beneficial to first them and second to your restaurant. Mix up these priorities and you are doomed to fail and will be scratching your head as to why all your tweets were for naught.

Some excellent examples of Tweeting restaurants are Kogibbq, Maggianos, urbansolace, CoffeeGroundz, JasonsDeli, and Popeyeschicken. Notice how they talk about other things and about other people!
